CHISEL
Along with fellow DC natives THE MAKE-UP, CHISEL helped bring the infectious sounds and far-out fashions of mod culture back to the rock underground. Taking cues from THE JAM's legendary frontman Paul Weller, CHISEL's charismatic scratchy-voiced leader Ted Leo shaped his band's engaging brand of rough-edged, loose-limbed, hook-heavy mod-punk, in the process helping set off the nascent garage-rock revival of the late '90s. Like MAKE-UP leader Ian Svenonious, Leo's roots lay in DC's emo/hardcore scene, a background which lent itself well to his forays into mod/garage-rock. With CHISEL, Mr. Leo was able to avoid the fruity pretensions which so often afflict purveyors of '60s rock nostalgia, instead creating something dynamic, vibrant, and contemporary. | | | RELEASES

CHISEL Nothing New (CD/12" EP) This eight song EP is the bridge that connects CHISEL's earlier, more frantic years with the song writing powerhouse they later became. Every track is a classic, and served to establish them as forerunners of the most recent mod revival, a can’t-miss for punks, mods, emo kids, indie rockers and everything in between. CD version contains the Sunburn 7" and live tracks!

CHISEL Set You Free (CD/LP) The final CHISEL album is nothing short of tremendous. Ted Leo and the gang exhibit incredible versatility throughout, moving effortlessly from crunching guitar riffs to acoustic ballads to sparse melodies to full-blown brass-backed craziness. It's just a damn shame they're no longer around. So pick this album up, for posterity's sake if nothing else- you'll get to see what THE BEATLES would have sounded like if they'd started out in circa-90s D.C. instead of Manchester. | | | |
