THE FLESH
The sexed-up death disco of Brooklyn NY’s THE FLESH explodes like TIMBALAND, THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, and SERGE GAINSBOURG forming a band at the dawn of the apocalypse: bouncing hip hop beats bashed out on live drums, taut bass lines and horror flick synthesizers pulse against a lyrical world of ill-fated love and biblical violence.

THE FLESH Sweet Defeat (CD/12" EP) "New York, what with its oxymoronic mix of mediocre bands and oversized egos, is not the mecca it once was, or seemed to be, for a brief moment. But damn it if THE FLESH hasn't stepped up to the plate, and with the count stacked against them, smacked this thing out of the park. "Sweet Defeat" is like Brit Pop with a cock: pure melody and sass. A curling, syncopated organ and probing guitar dance a samba around Nathan Halpern's passionate, wailing lyrics, an indie rock answer to Mario Winans' "I Don't Wanna Know." The rest of the tunes almost match this ridiculous high, and "Cuts," an apocalyptic hip hop hybrid of DEVO and COOLIO, does so without even trying. If this foursome can maintain the same level of intensity over a full length, THE FLESH may prove all the NYC naysayers wrong."

THE FLESH self-titled (CD/LP) "New York City sex dealers THE FLESH," wrote Allmusic.com’s Johnny Loftus, “will either die a quick yet good-looking death or release an amazing full-length.” THE FLESH is in fact very much alive, delivering on the promise of the Sweet Defeat and Death Connection EPs to produce one of the most thrilling and forward-looking records to emerge from the American underground in years. Fusing thumping R&B beats with the savage sexuality of early New York punk and a penchant for baroque pop that could melt the coldest heart, they have created an album of “truly stunning” anthems (FILTER) rife with “death, love, religious salvation, and sultry sex” (CMJ). | | | |
